Women in Military Service for America Memorial Anniversary

When thinking of the armed forces, we often think of men fighting for their country. However, many courageous women have also sacrificed their lives for their countrymen. Initially found as nurses or cooks in war camps, women later became a part of combat. Women have been a part of the U.S. armed forces since 1917, and a memorial known as the Military Women’s Memorial was erected by the U.S. government in 1997 to honor them. The memorial contains a Hemicycle structure built in 1932, which was renovated and surrounded by a new memorial in 1988. The final design of the memorial blends Neoclassical and Modern architecture to honor the brave women it commemorates.
