 Holiday Spotlight

 Maha Saptami

India enthusiastically celebrates the 10-day Durga Puja festival. Maha Saptami, the seventh day, marks the beginning of the Festival. It is believed that the battle between Goddess Durga and the demon king Mahishasura began on this day. Another legend is that Lord Rama prayed to Goddess Durga before battling Ravana on the seventh day of the month of Ashwin.

Durga Puja rituals include Navapatrika, where nine plants are bathed in the River Ganges; Mahasnan, where a mirror symbolizing Goddess Durga is given a ritual bath; and Prana Prathishta, where holy water and coconut are placed in front of the goddess's idol.
