Holiday Spotlight
World Suicide Prevention Day
Our
busy lives often lead to mental health issues going unnoticed. Every 40
seconds, someone dies by suicide, with approximately 800,000 yearly deaths. To
combat this, the International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP)
established World Suicide Prevention Day in 2003, aiming to raise awareness and
educate the public on recognizing warning signs and reaching out to those in
need. The day is co-sponsored by the World Federation for Mental Health and the
World Health Organization.
The
main goals of this initiative include organizing activities to increase
awareness about suicide prevention, developing national policies, and
strengthening countries’ capabilities for prevention. Both the IASP and WHO
advocate for suicide prevention through the message "Take a Minute, Change
a Life." The efforts have gained momentum, with events including
conferences, seminars, and discussions, aiming to educate and provide support
for suicide prevention. Additionally, initiatives such as the Light a Candle
Campaign and support groups have been established to provide resources for
depression and suicide awareness and treatment.
In
2017, rapper Logic's song ‘1-800-273-8255’ led to an increase in calls to
suicide helpline numbers, highlighting the impact of awareness campaigns.
Conversely, reports of celebrity deaths led to a 13% increase in suicides
during the same period.
