Holiday Highlight
ST NICHOLAS DAY
Saint Nicholas was born to wealthy Christian parents in the third century in Patara, Asia Minor. After their death, he gave away his inheritance to help the sick and suffering, earning a reputation for generosity. He became the Bishop of Myra and was imprisoned for his faith under Emperor Diocletian. After his release, he attended the Council of Nicaea and continued to serve those in need. St. Nicholas died on December 6, A.D. 343, and was buried in a cathedral, where legend says healing 'manna' formed in his grave. His death is commemorated as St. Nicholas Day, celebrating his spirit of generosity and forgiveness.
The image of St. Nicholas, who rode a horse to deliver gifts to children, evolved into Santa Claus in the 19th century. Good children received sweets, while the naughty ones got coal. This tradition led to the Dutch version, Sinterklaas. St. Nicholas Day is widely celebrated and is associated with many folktales, making him a beloved figure in Christian history.
