 Holiday Highlight

 INTERNATIONAL CHEETAH DAY

International Cheetah Day, celebrated on December 4, has an inspiring origin. It began in 1977 when American Zoologist Dr. Laurie Marker took a cheetah named Khayam, whom she had raised, to Namibia to test if captive cheetahs could be reintroduced to the wild. The experiment succeeded, but Dr. Marker saw the threats cheetahs faced from farmers protecting their livestock.

In response, she founded the Cheetah Conservation Fund in 1991 to educate locals about wildlife preservation. To honor Khayam’s memory, she chose his birthday for this awareness campaign. Unfortunately, by 2020, only about 7,100 cheetahs remained in the wild, representing a drastic 50% decline over four decades due to hunting and habitat loss. Let’s use this day to honor and protect cheetahs.
