Holiday Highlight
MALTA REPUBLIC DAY
Malta was colonized by the French, whose aggression towards Maltese Catholic traditions made them unpopular. During the Napoleonic Wars, the British aided Malta, leading to its incorporation into the British Empire in 1814 via the Treaty of Paris.
Malta gained independence in 1964, initially recognizing Queen Elizabeth II as Head of State. In 1974, it became a Republic but remained part of the British Commonwealth. On December 13, 1974, Malta approved a new constitution establishing an elected president as head of state, with Sir Anthony Mamo as the first president.
On Republic Day, the President of Malta honors citizens for outstanding contributions. Celebrations occur at the Presidential Palace in Valletta, featuring a military parade on Republic Street, with streets adorned in red and white. The Malta Council for Culture and Arts organizes events that include traditional folk dances such as ‘il-Maltija’ and ‘parata,’ complemented by fireworks across the archipelago.
