1872 – The Great Boston Fire of 1872.

1887 – The United States receives rights to Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

1906 – Theodore Roosevelt was the first sitting President of the United States to make an official trip outside the country to inspect progress on the Panama Canal.

1917 – The Balfour Declaration is published in The Times newspaper.

1965 – Several U.S. states and parts of Canada are hit by a series of blackouts lasting up to 13 hours in the Northeast blackout 1965.

   Benjamin Franklin, one of the most extraordinary figures in American history, was born on January 17, 1706, in Boston, Massachusetts. His life spanned an era of remarkable change and progress, and Franklin himself was a driving force behind much of this transformation.  Franklin's thirst for knowledge was evident from a young age. Born into a modest family, he had limited formal education but compensated for this with an insatiable curiosity and a passion for self-learning.
