Fawke's Night
The
Gunpowder Plot of 1605 was a failed attempt by Robert Catesby and a group of
Catholic conspirators to assassinate King James I and restore Catholic rule in
England. Discontented with James’ continued persecution of Catholics, Catesby
devised a plan to blow up Parliament by placing 36 barrels of gunpowder beneath
the House of Lords. Guy Fawkes, skilled in explosives, was assigned to guard
the stash.
The
plot unraveled when Lord Monteagle, a Catholic loyal to the Crown, received an
anonymous warning and alerted authorities. Fawkes was captured, tortured, and
revealed his accomplices, leading to their arrest and execution. The public
celebrated the king’s survival with bonfires, and Parliament established
November 5 as Gunpowder Treason Day, later evolving into Guy Fawkes Night. Over
time, Fawkes' image shifted from traitor to a symbol of resistance, popularized
by the *V for Vendetta* graphic novel.
