Holiday Highlight

St. Andrew's Day

St. Andrew, an apostle of Jesus, is the patron saint of Scotland, a role he has held since 1320 when Scotland declared independence. Scots have celebrated him for over a thousand years, with feasts dating back to 1000 AD. The flag of Scotland, the St. Andrew’s Cross, honors him, and the town of St Andrews is believed to be his final resting place.

Andrew is significant because he was present at key events in Jesus' life, including the Last Supper and moments on the Mount of Olives.

In America, St. Andrew’s Day is recognized by two notable societies: the “St. Andrew’s Society of Charleston,” founded in 1729, and “The St. Andrew’s Society of the State of New York,” created in 1756. Both organizations focus on helping the needy and are influential within their communities.

Celebrated on November 30, St. Andrew’s Day marks the beginning of Scotland’s Winter Festival. The day is filled with Scottish culture, featuring dancing, music, food, and drink, and festivities often last until early morning.
