Holiday
Highlight
Buy
Nothing Day
This
day serves as an anti-holiday, emerging in response to Black Friday. The term
"Black Friday" comes from retailers moving from ‘in the red’
operating at a loss to ‘in the black achieving positive income after
Thanksgiving. This shopping frenzy, which takes place the day after
Thanksgiving, attracts early Christmas shoppers with enticing sales.
To
counter the shift from gratitude to chaos, Canadian artist Ted Dave founded
National Buy Nothing Day in 1992. This day encourages people to abstain from
shopping and reflect on the excessive waste and spending that occurs during the
holiday season.
On
the fourth Friday of November, you may see Buy Nothing protestors wandering
malls in a ‘zombie walk,’ engaging in odd behavior to raise awareness about
anti-consumerism. Whether you spend the day relaxing at home or participating
in these activities, take a moment to consider the spirit of this national
anti-shopping day.
