Highlight
National Jukebox Day
Jukeboxes
revolutionized the music industry by allowing people to enjoy music in bars and
restaurants while giving artists more exposure to sell vinyl records. The first
jukebox, a nickel phonograph, was created by Louis Glass and William S. Arnold
at the Palais Royale Saloon in San Francisco on November 23, 1889. It earned
over $4,000 in its first year (about $120,249.23 today).
As
their popularity grew, advancements followed, such as improved record
production and amplifiers. In 1905, John Gabel introduced the Automatic
Entertainer with 24 song selections, and in 1928, Justus P. Seeburg launched
the audiophone with eight turntables.
Despite
facing competition from radio and the Great Depression, jukeboxes became
popular again, entering their Golden Age as a source of entertainment. The term
"jukebox" originated in the southern U.S. in 1937, with designs
evolving from simple wooden boxes to vibrant, illuminated machines. These
innovations redefined entertainment and increased artists' visibility, leading
TouchTunes to designate the day before Thanksgiving as National Jukebox Day.
