Highlight
National Larimar Day
Larimar
is a unique blue pectolite found exclusively in the southern Dominican
Republic, specifically in Southwest Barahona. Discovered in 1916 by Father
Miguel Domingo Fuertes de Loren, the stone's mining request was initially
denied, leading it to fade into obscurity.
In
1976, craftsman Miguel Mendez rediscovered the stone and named it
"Larimar," blending his daughter Larissa's nickname "Lari"
with the Spanish word "mar," meaning sea. This captivating gemstone
has since become a symbol of Dominican heritage.
The
only Larimar mine is located in Los Chupaderos, near Barahona. The Dominican
Republic celebrated its first National Larimar Day on November 22, 2018,
marking the anniversary of its discovery. Today, Larimar fascinates both
tourists and locals, available in various forms as jewelry and décor in gift
shops across the country.
