Holiday Highlight

All Saints Day

All Saints Day is celebrated annually on November 1 and has its roots in a fourth-century Greek Christian tradition. The first official celebration occurred on May 13, 609, when Pope Boniface IV declared the day a holiday to honor the Blessed Virgin Mary and all martyrs. In 835, Pope Gregory III moved the observance to November 1 to include all saints and those recognized by God.

The date likely replaced the pagan feast of Samhain, during which evil spirits were believed to roam, prompting people to dress as creatures to confuse them. This tradition evolved into what we now call Halloween or All Hallows' Eve. Although the observance diminished during the Reformation, many Protestant churches merged it with All Souls' Day on November 2. It was eradicated as an official church festival in 1770, but many still celebrate it on the first Sunday in November.

In Roman Catholicism, All Saints Day is a Holy Day of Obligation, requiring attendance at Mass unless there is a valid reason not to. If November 1 falls on a Monday or Saturday near the Sunday sabbath, attendance is encouraged but not mandatory. Traditionally, the Beatitudes are read, and many churches now also honor those who died in the past year, with some people placing candles on graves on All Hallows' Eve.
