Women Entrepreneurship Day
Women
have been involved in entrepreneurial ventures for centuries, although they
were often unrecognized as entrepreneurs due to the male-centric definition of
the term. In the 18th and 19th centuries, many women-owned businesses through
inheritance or to supplement their income.
Eliza
Lucas Pinckney of South Carolina became the first recorded female business
owner in the U.S. at 16 when she took over her family’s plantations. During
this period, women also owned brothels, taverns, and retail shops, but societal
norms considered such businesses shameful.
The
early 20th century saw a shift toward progressive views, coinciding with the
rise of feminism. Black women became prominent entrepreneurs, excelling in
dressmaking, hair care, and midwifery, with figures like Madam C. J. Walker
emerging as successful leaders.
Organizations
like the Women’s Business Development Center and Count Me In were founded in
the late 1980s and 1990s to support female entrepreneurs, although gender
inequality in business persisted. Since 2000, support and access to financing
for women-owned businesses have increased significantly.
In
2013, Wendy Diamond founded the Women’s Entrepreneurship Day Organization
(WEDO) after volunteering in Honduras. WEDO celebrated the first Women’s
Entrepreneurship Day on November 19, 2014, and it is now recognized by cities
such as New York and Los Angeles, the U.S. House of Representatives, and the
United Nations.
