Holiday Highlight

 Mickey Mouse Day

Mickey Mouse is an iconic figure for the Disney brand, but he almost didn't exist. He was created as a replacement for Oswald the Rabbit, which Disney originally produced for Charles Mintz at Universal Studios. When Disney requested a budget increase due to Oswald's success, Mintz instead proposed a 20 percent pay cut and reminded Disney that Oswald was owned by Universal. Disney refused the new contract, completing his final Oswald comic, and ending his partnership with Universal.

Starting fresh with only two animators, Ub Iwerks and Les Clark, Disney learned the importance of owning the rights to his characters. Inspired by a tamed mouse at his desk at Laugh-O-Gram Studio, he originally named the new character Mortimer Mouse, but his wife Lillian convinced him to change it to Mickey Mouse.

Mickey made his debut in the short “Plane Crazy” on May 14, 1928, but it did not attract distributors. A second short, “The Gallopin’ Gaucho,” also struggled for distribution. Finally, “Steamboat Willie,” released on November 18, 1928, was a success and marked Mickey's official introduction, co-directed by Walt Disney and Ub Iwerks.
