Holiday Highlight

 Steve Irwin Day

Steve Irwin Day honors the life of the beloved Australian zookeeper Steve Irwin, who was born on February 22, 1960. He grew up in a wildlife-loving family surrounded by animals. In 1970, his family opened the Beerwah Reptile and Fauna Park in Queensland, which later became the Australia Zoo, the site that established Steve Irwin Day in 2007.

Although he lacked a formal degree in wildlife, Steve had extensive experience. At age six, he received a 12-foot python, and by nine, he wrestled his first crocodile with his father's guidance. He married in 1991, and footage from their honeymoon formed the first episode of the TV series "The Crocodile Hunter," which turned him into a cultural icon.

Tragically, on September 4, 2006, Steve was killed by a stingray while filming for "Ocean's Deadliest." His memorial service drew over 300 million viewers worldwide. As a conservationist, he was dedicated to preserving endangered species and fighting illegal poaching.
