National American Teddy Bear Day
Do
you remember the name of your childhood teddy bear? Today, we celebrate these
cherished companions, whether you gave yours away, stored it in the attic, or
still cuddled with it.
While
the origins of National American Teddy Bear Day are unclear, teddy bears have a
rich history. Margarete Steiff created the first stuffed bear for her nephew
after a zoo visit in 1903. Morris Michtom named them "Teddy Bears" in
honor of President Theodore Roosevelt, who famously refused to shoot a bear
during a hunting trip in 1902. Michtom produced many teddy bears, making them
beloved childhood toys.
Originally
made with mohair fur, teddy bears are now commonly crafted from velour, satin,
denim, and synthetic materials. They have inspired art, including John Walter
Bratton’s 1907 instrumental "The Teddy Bears' Picnic" and characters
like Teddy Ruxpin and Winnie the Pooh in the 1990s.
Teddy
bears provide emotional comfort to children, leading to initiatives like the
Teddy Bear Corps, where first responders give bears to distressed kids.
Representing love and care, teddy bears are popular gifts for birthdays and
Valentine's Day.
