Holiday Highlight
American Fancy Rat & Mouse Day
Many people dislike rats and mice due to their tendency to damage property and spread diseases. However, lab rats and mice, known as fancy rats and mice, are exceptions; they are intelligent, adorable, and clean.
The organized hobby of fancy rats began on October 24, 1901, when Mary Douglas sought permission to showcase her pet rats at the National Mouse Club exhibition in Aylesbury, England.
The American Fancy Rat and Mouse Association (A.F.R.M.A.), founded in 1983, promotes these animals as excellent pets and educates the public on their positive qualities and proper care.
Competitive shows are held four times a year in Southern California, where animals are evaluated based on official standards. A.F.R.M.A. also organizes fun pet shows and information booths, encouraging appreciation of fancy rats and mice, particularly on Fancy Rat & Mouse Day.
