Marine
Corps Birthday
The
Continental Marines were formed on November 10, 1775, just eight months before
the Declaration of Independence, following the passage of the Continental
Marine Act. Their primary role was to support the newly established Continental
Navy by intercepting ammunition shipments from Britain. Led by Commandant
Samuel Nicholas, the Corps grew to over 2,100 servicemen, in contrast to the
Continental Army's peak of about 80,000 troops. Though a planned attack on Nova
Scotia did not occur, the Marines continued to serve throughout the Revolutionary
War.
After
the war, the Continental Marines were disbanded, and the Naval Service fell
into neglect until Congress reestablished it in 1794. As the need for naval
power grew, the Marines operated under the Navy and, in 1798, were made a
separate branch of service. The Marine Corps was officially founded on July 11,
1798.
The
Marine Corps birthday was recognized in 1921 when Major Edwin North McClellan
proposed celebrating it on November 10. In the 1950s, standard celebrations
were established, encouraging Marines to honor this anniversary with greater
significance.
