ADA
Lovelace Day
Born
in 1815, Ada Lovelace, the daughter of Lord Byron, had the rare opportunity to
study math and science due to her privileged upbringing. Mentored by Charles
Babbage, she published what is now recognized as the first algorithm in 1843.
Despite never seeing it tested, her work with Babbage proposed that computers
could do more than basic arithmetic, making her the world's first computer
programmer.
In
2009, Ada Lovelace Day was founded to celebrate her contributions and promote
women in STEM careers. Advocates of STEM education argue that it provides women
with more career options and benefits science by including diverse
perspectives. This day aims to honor those who champion the importance of
science and math.
