Holiday Highlight

 Masskara Festival

The MassKara Festival started in 1980 during President Ferdinand Marcos's dictatorship. At that time, sugar prices plummeted due to sugar alternatives, leading two artists to promote mask-making as a new source of income. Additionally, a tragic ferry incident, the sinking of the MV Don Juan, resulted in many local deaths. The festival was created to uplift spirits during these challenging times.

The smiling masks represent the resilience of Bacolod locals, earning the city the nickname “City of Smiles.” The name MassKara combines ‘mass’ (many) and ‘kara’ (faces), reflecting the festival’s theme. Initially sold as souvenirs, the masks have since become a key symbol of the celebration.

The festival’s highlight is a dance competition featuring colorful costumes and Latin music. Other main events include Electric MassKara, a night parade with LED-lit dancers and floats, the MassKara Festival Queen pageant, food festivals, and a float parade. The festival draws both locals and tourists, celebrated for its vibrant decorations and lively atmosphere
