 Holiday Spotlight

National Kangaroo Awareness Day

Approximately 30 million years ago, kangaroos' ancestors arrived in the Australian rainforests, possibly evolving from possum-like animals. As grasslands became more prevalent, the kangaroo species diversified and evolved into the red kangaroos we see today.

Scientists classify similar-looking red and gray kangaroos, wallabies, musky-rat kangaroos, and other animals as 'macropods.' The term "kangaroo" is often used to refer to various animals of this family, but only the fast-hopping red and gray-colored kangaroos are scientifically considered kangaroos.

Scientists theorize that kangaroos hop to escape predators, forage for food, and move more effectively, especially in the deserts of Australia. Despite limited knowledge of their history, it's crucial to preserve these marsupials as a global asset. This day celebrates these magnificent creatures.
