 Holiday Spotlight

Yom Kippur

Yom Kippur is the holiest day in the Jewish faith, known as "the day of atonement." It takes place on the 10th day of Tishrei, the seventh month of the Hebrew calendar. According to tradition, Yom Kippur originated from the time of Prophet Moses. The holiday marks the end of the 10 Days of Repentance, which begins with the Jewish New Year, Rosh Hashanah. Jews believe that through acts of prayer, charity, and repentance, the book their names are written in can be changed before Yom Kippur. Atonement for sins is achieved through fasting and refraining from certain activities. Visiting the synagogue is also a tradition during this time.
