Holiday Spotlight
Fight
Procrastination Day
Hesiod,
a Greek poet, was one of the first to speak out against procrastination. In the
poem titled "Works and Days," Hesiod advises his brother, who has
mismanaged his inheritance, not to neglect his responsibilities.
While
the origins of the holiday are unknown, the message is similar to Hesiod's. We
need to take a decisive step to address the issue of postponing tasks. Although
there are numerous strategies to combat procrastination, it is a persistent
adversary that never admits defeat. It can take on various disguises, but the
outcome is always the same: delay.
Throughout
history, people have attempted various creative methods to combat
procrastination with mixed success. The most effective approach appears to
differ from individual to individual; you need to determine what works best for
you. Consider the case of the famous artist Victor Hugo, who chose to work
naked in his room to concentrate on his work.
Hugo
determined that the best way to eliminate outside distractions was to have no
option but to remain indoors. With his clothes held by an assistant and only
returned at a later time, he had little choice but to work. James Riley is
another individual who resorted to extreme measures to address procrastination
issues.
In
modern times, there are programs and applications available to help effectively
plan your schedule. Several applications can even serve as a filter based on
pre-set settings to help manage distractions.
Fight
Procrastination Day serves as a reminder that we are not alone in this
struggle; millions of people are grappling with the same issues. However, it is
up to you to make the necessary effort to break this habit.
