Holiday Spotlight

Save The Koala Day

The Australian Koala Foundation, also known as AKF, initiated the Save The Koala Month celebrations as part of its campaign dedicated to helping the koala population. The foundation was established in 1986 by two veterinary doctors under the guidance of Deborah Tabart. Its primary goal is to save wild koalas by protecting and managing their habitat. The foundation organizes an annual campaign to raise awareness of the threats to koalas and to raise funds to support their mission.

In 2012, the wild koala was listed as "vulnerable to extinction" under the EPBC Act of Australian Law. This listing was the result of persistent lobbying by the Australian Koala Foundation. Following a senate inquiry and numerous submissions overseen by Deborah Tabart, the resultant report was a clear indictment of the government's failure to protect one of Australia's most beloved icons, the koalas. However, the listing alone did not prove to be sufficient. Unfortunately, Australia continues to underestimate the urgent need for koala conservation.

The Australian Koala Foundation is now advocating for a Koala Protection Act, similar to the Bald Eagle Act enacted in 1942, to be implemented into Australian law for guaranteed protection in the future. The Koala Army is actively working at all levels of government to promote the implementation of the Koala Protection Act.
