National Meow Like a Pirate Day
On
every September 19th, National Meow Like a Pirate Day gives cats an opportunity
to meow like a pirate and show off their sea paws. While meowing like a pirate
may seem unusual, there is historical evidence of cats being associated with
pirates.
Cats
were often taken on board by pirates as they were considered to bring good luck
and keep away bad spirits and rats. Although cats are not known for their love
of water, many pirates couldn't swim either. Therefore, cats were just as
suited as any other pirate to accompany them on their high-sea adventures.
The
mysterious and independent nature of cats makes them ideal companions on a
pirate ship. Their independence meant that the pirates didn't have to worry
about their feline companions as they went about their plundering. This
independent nature still makes cats attractive as pets today.
Another
reason why cats and pirates are a great match is their predatory nature and
their ability to use surprise to attack their enemies. It makes perfect sense
to celebrate both the prowess of cats and the swashbuckling style of pirates on
the same day.
