– Peace between Sweden and Russia in the Finnish War; the territory that will
become Finland is ceded to Russia by the Treaty of Fredrikshamn.

– American abolitionist Harriet Tubman escapes from slavery.

– The Wright Flyer, flown by Orville Wright, with Lieutenant Thomas Selfridge

Smithsonian Day
The
Smithsonian Institution was established between 1765 and 1829 by James
Smithson, a British scientist who donated his estate to the United States. The
building, designed by architect James Renwick Jr., opened in 1855. It became a
center for scientific research and a depository for various government
collections. The Smithsonian has since become the world’s largest museum,
education, and research complex, with 21 museums, the National Zoo, and nine
research facilities.
