 Holiday Spotlight

 National Macadamia Nut Day

The macadamia tree is native to Australia and has four species that produce edible nuts. It is also known as the Queensland nut, the mariachi nut, and the bauble nut. Although rare, macadamia nuts are highly sought after in the culinary world. The white chocolate macadamia nut cookie is particularly popular. The trees were first discovered by native Aborigines in the rainforests of Australia about 1,000 years ago. Allan Cunningham introduced Macadamia nuts in Europe in 1828, but they were not named until 1857, after Scottish-Australian chemist John Macadam. In 1882, macadamia trees were introduced to Hawaii, and the nut industry was established shortly after.
