Highlighted Holiday

Mead Day

Mead Day is a celebration for mead lovers and brewers. Mead, an alcoholic beverage, has been brewed for centuries in ancient civilizations across Europe, Africa, and Asia and remains popular today. It is made by fermenting honey with water and other desired ingredients.

There is evidence of mead brewing in pottery from northern China and ceramic containers in Europe. Mead was also enjoyed by the people in Ancient India and Ancient Greece.

The process of making mead is similar to making wine. Wine yeast can be easily used to make mead and honey ferments at around the same temperatures as grape juice for wine.

Unlike wine, mead involves primary and secondary fermentation. The first fermentation happens fairly quickly. When the process slows down, the mead is moved into another container through racking, which involves moving the beverage from one container to another using gravity rather than a pump so the beverage is undisturbed. The second, slower fermentation happens in the second container.

The primary fermentation takes place over one to two months, after which the mead is left in the second container to age for six to nine months. The fermentation time is influenced by the quality of honey, its composition, the other ingredients used in the recipe, and the temperature of the surrounding environment.
