Holiday
National
Water Balloon Day
National
Water Balloon Day was established by the town of Newmarket, New Hampshire in
2019 as a way for residents to have fun and cool down in the hot summer sun. It
is considered a wholesome and family-friendly activity since it is inclusive
and energetic, encouraging bonding and enjoyment for people of all ages.
Water
balloons are a popular feature at pool parties, playgrounds, and summer events,
bringing joy to those who play with them. There is an undeniable thrill and
excitement when throwing a water-filled balloon and witnessing its burst of
wetness and rubber debris. For many, the back and forth of throwing balloons
ignites unparalleled excitement.
The
water balloon has retained its form and use since its inception in 1950. The
British inventor Edgar Ellington initially intended it to treat trench foot by
filling a latex sock with water. However, when it leaked, he threw it against a
table, and the subsequent explosion sparked the idea to market it as a
children's plaything, which it remains today.
Since
its invention, there have been numerous innovations, including different types
of water balloons and more efficient ways and devices to fill them. Water
balloon fights also help participants develop skills such as tactical thinking,
teamwork, and leadership. Nevertheless, the primary goal of the water balloon
remains unchanged: to bring simple, wet fun to people everywhere. Just remember
to keep a towel handy!
