National Park Service Founders Day
President Woodrow Wilson signed the Organic Act on August 25, 1916, creating the National Park Service under the Department of the Interior. The Service protects 400 areas across the US and its territories, totaling 84 million acres. The first national park, Yellowstone, was established in 1872. Today, over 400 areas, including 59 designated national parks, cover vast areas. The Service employs 22,000 workers and welcomes nearly 300 million visitors each year.
