Holiday Spotlight

Day for Remembrance of the Slave Trade and Its Abolition

The day commemorates the Haitian people's fight for freedom from slavery. For over 400 years, millions of Africans endured the transatlantic slave trade. Haiti's history was marked by conflict from the arrival of the Spanish in the 15th century. The Haitian Revolution in the early 1790s led to Haiti's independence and the abolition of slavery on January 1, 1804. The UN observes a day of remembrance on August 23 to honor those who fought for their humanity and dignity.
