World Lion Day
Dereck
and Beverly Joubert, passionate about preserving wild cats, initiated World Lion Day in 2013. They established the Big Cat Initiative
(B.C.I.) in 2009 in partnership with National Geographic to protect and
conserve the remaining lion species in the world. The B.C.I. has made
significant progress, receiving over 150 grant awards, mitigating nearly 3,000
threats to wild cats, and removing 13,000 life-threatening snares.
Lions,
as apex predators, weigh between 300 and 600 pounds and are the second-largest
cat species after tigers. They are known for their distinctive manes, and they
form pride’s to enhance their hunting success, typically found in savannas and
grasslands near water sources.
