WORLD MANGROVE DAY

Did you know that World Mangrove Day is celebrated on July 26 to raise awareness about the importance of mangrove ecosystems? This day promotes the conservation and sustainable growth of mangrove forests.

Mangrove forests, with their unique and vital role in the environment, play a crucial part in supporting rich biodiversity. The tangled roots of these forests act as a nursery for many organisms, protecting them from predators, extreme heat, and strong tides. They also help in removing five times more carbon dioxide from the atmosphere than terrestrial forests.

However, the urgency of the situation cannot be overstated. Over the past 40 years, the area covered by mangrove forests has almost halved, mainly due to shrimp farming. Large portions of the forests are uprooted to create closed ponds for breeding shrimp, leading to significant ecological damage.

Wood from mangrove forests is highly valuable and is often used for charcoal production, leading to severe deforestation. Additionally, rivers are sometimes diverted for various purposes, disrupting the mangrove habitat.
