Highlighted Holiday

NATIONAL COUSINS DAY

National Cousins Day showed up on our calendars at some point, but we're not quite sure when. What we do know is that cousins have long played a big role in keeping families connected.

American families have been getting together for reunions since the first settlers left their homes and traveled west in search of fortune and land. As time went on, the responsibility of keeping the extended family connected was passed down from one generation to the next, and cousins became the guardians of family ties.

Even if your family doesn't have regular reunions anymore, cousins often reach out to each other later in life to reminisce about their shared family memories. If your cousins are as close as siblings or if you grew up as best friends, staying in touch with them might not need a special day on the calendar. But if you come from a small family or one where everyone seems to have scattered, celebrating cousinship might take a bit more effort. You might need to mark National Cousins Day on your calendar as a reason to reconnect with your childhood cousins.

Visiting a family member you haven't seen since you were both relegated to the kids' table is always an interesting and nostalgic reunion. You get to catch up on where life has taken you, the families you've started, the careers you've pursued, and how you've all changed over the years.
