Highlighted Holiday

PALAU CONSTITUTION DAY

Around 3,000 to 4,500 years ago, Southeast Asian people settled in what is now the Republic of Palau. They were skilled in agriculture and used advanced shell and stone technology for terracing. The first Europeans to arrive were the Spaniards, followed by German rule in 1899.

During World War I, the Japanese took over and built modern infrastructure and industries. Despite the challenging times, Palauans showed resilience and adaptability. The Japanese rule continued for years, with Koror having a sizeable Japanese population by 1935. During World War II, Palau became a substantial military base for the Japanese.

After the defeat of the Axis Powers in 1947, Palau became a U.S.-administered territory. 1981, a new constitution was adopted, and in 1986, a draft of the Compact of Free Association with the United States was agreed upon. Following a Supreme Court ruling that an amendment was unconstitutional, Palau met America’s demands, achieving self-governance in free association with the U.S. on October 1, 1994.
