Day of Friendship
The
world can be tough. There's a lot of miscommunication, mistreatment, lack of
trust, discrimination, and cultural differences, and it seems like peace isn't
a top priority in the global society. But there's really no good reason why the
world shouldn't be a more harmonious place. The United Nations reminds us that
there's still good out there. In 2011, they introduced the International Day of
Friendship, which is about connecting people and bridging cultural and
ideological gaps.
Friendship
is all about building connections and bonds, not just based on shared traits or
hobbies, but also on understanding and embracing diversity and inclusion. Even
with our differences, we can find common ground. Our physical appearance,
opinions, political views, and preferences shouldn't be reasons to separate us.
The UN works to promote kindness and togetherness every July.
We
can celebrate friendship in simple ways, like sending a quick note, grabbing
coffee, going to a concert, or just hanging out at the mall to find
commonalities. We have more in common than we think! Any idea that reduces the
amount of hate and negativity in the world is worth spreading. It's something
we can all get behind.
Before
the UN declared it, the very first World Friendship Day was suggested in 1958
by the World Friendship Crusade, an international organization that promotes a
peaceful culture through friendship.
