NATIONAL
HIRE A VETERAN DAY
The
term 'veteran' originates from the Latin word 'vetus', meaning 'old', and is
used worldwide to refer to individuals with long careers in a specific
occupation. President Abraham Lincoln advocated for the fair treatment of
veterans near the end of the Second American Civil War. Following World War I,
discontented veterans protested their treatment, leading to changes. The Second
World War prompted further changes in veterans' treatment, with the
establishment of comprehensive veterans' administrations and the G.I. Bill to
support returning veterans. Marine Corps veteran Dan Caporale founded the
non-profit Hire Our Heroes to employ veterans and established National Hire a
Veteran Day, which is supported by the HIRE Vets Act and the HIRE Vets
Medallion Program signed by President Donald Trump in 2017.
