ZOO DAY
American
Zoo Day is celebrated every year on July 1 to commemorate the opening of the
Philadelphia Zoo to the public in 1874. This zoo holds significance as it was
the first zoo in America. Although the zoo's charter was signed in 1859, it was
not public until after the Civil War. The Philadelphia Zoo is
also notable for its focus on conserving various animal species, currently
housing over 1,300 animals.
While
zoos have existed since ancient Egypt, it was not until the 19th century that
the trend of opening zoos became widespread. Initially, zoos were created for
entertainment purposes and did not prioritize the welfare and lifespans of
animals. However, after World War II, zoos became breeding grounds for
animals nearing extinction. Zoos have played a crucial role in saving several
threatened species from extinction. For instance, in 1947, only 50
Hawaiian geese were left in Hawaii. Two of these geese were taken to a sanctuary in
England, where they successfully bred.
Scientists
often study zoos and the exotic animals within them to understand their
behavior and develop better living conditions for mammals. Since 1830, many of these
studies have been published in the Journal of Zoology.
