WORLD
LISTENING DAY
July
18 marks World Listening Day, which celebrates the birthday of Raymond Murray
Schafer, a Canadian composer and environmentalist known as the founder of
acoustic ecology. He established the World Soundscape Project in the 1970s,
laying the groundwork for the ideas and practices of acoustic ecology. The
holiday, established in 2010, has a different theme each year, such as 'H20,'
'Sounds Lost & Found,' and 'Listen to You!' In 2017, the theme was
'Listening to the Ground,' in honor of American composer Pauline Oliveros. This
year's theme for World Listening Day 2021 is 'The Unquiet Earth,' created by
filmmaker and organizer Raquel Castro. Listening is an art that demands full
attention and patience, benefiting both the listener and the speaker. It helps
improve listening skills and heightens awareness of our environment. Despite
its significance, we often fail to use our sense of hearing effectively, tuning
out most sounds and voices.
