Holiday
BASTILLE
DAY
Bastille
Day, also known as 'Fête Nationale' in France, commemorates the fall of the
Bastille and the monarchy on July 14, 1789. The Bastille, originally a fortress
and later a state prison, became a symbol of the end of the monarchical regime.
The holiday officially became a thing in 1880 and has since been celebrated
with military parades, fireworks, speeches, and public displays, marking the
downfall of the strict monarchical rule. Former French colonies and countries
with friendly relations with France also celebrate it. French Polynesia does
its own thing, with dancing, singing, and entertainment performances happening
throughout July.
