KIDS DAY
National
Kids Day, celebrated in the U.S. since the 1800s, has had variations in its
date. It was first established by Reverend Dr. Charles Leonard in 1857 on the
second Sunday of June and later changed to October 8 by President Bill Clinton.
Governor Pat Quinn of Illinois later proclaimed the second Sunday of June as
the celebration date. Many other nations celebrate children's rights on
November 20, the day the United Nations adopted the Declaration of the Child's Rights in 1959 and the Convention on the Rights of the Child in 1989.
World Children's Day has marked the anniversary of these adoptions since 1990.
