INTERNATIONAL DAY OF THE TROPICS

On June 14, 2016, the United Nations General Assembly decided that June 29 would be the International Day of the Tropics, celebrating the anniversary of the first ‘State of the Tropics Report’ launched by Aung San Suu Kyi of Myanmar in 2014.

The tropics cover the area between the tropics of Cancer and Capricorn and are known for their warm weather with little day-to-day temperature changes. However, they face challenges like climate change, deforestation, urbanization, and demographic shifts.

The first State of the Tropics Report was released on June 29, 2014, with contributions from twelve leading tropical research facilities. Its insights led to the United Nations officially designating June 29 as International Day of the Tropics in 2016.

This particular day aims to raise awareness of issues affecting tropical areas and emphasize these countries' crucial role in achieving sustainable development. While tropical regions are popular vacation spots, they face significant challenges such as climate change, urbanization, shifting demographics, and deforestation.
