VINCY
MAS IN SAINT VINCENT AND THE GRENADINES
The
Vincy Mas carnival is a beautiful mix of cultures in the Caribbean. It brings
together traditions from the colonizers, slaves, and indigenous people,
creating a vibrant celebration. Originally, Vincy Mas was a pre-Lenten
carnival, a time to enjoy before the start of Lent. The word
"carnival" comes from the Latin "carne levare," symbolizing
the "removal of meat."
Carnivals
were introduced in the 17th and 18th centuries with the arrival of French and
English settlers. Initially, Vincy Mas was celebrated by the European settlers
through private parties in their homes, but over time, the festivities were
embraced by many indigenous people. Religious ceremonies began to merge
traditional Creole practices and customs from African religions brought to the
island by freed slaves.
In
the 20th century, the carnival introduced Calypso music, and today, Vincy Mas
has its own unique identity, blending various cultural practices. The carnival
features traditional music performances, soca, calypso, concerts, and steel
drumming contests. There are also fun activities specifically organized for the
city's children.
