KING
KAMEHAMEHA DAY
Kamehameha
the Great, born in 1758 in Kohala, Hawaii, united the Hawaiian Islands and
founded the Kamehameha dynasty. He emerged victorious in battles to control the islands and eventually became the King of all the Hawaiian islands.
Kamehameha
was born into Hawaiian royalty and was prophesied to become a great king. After
inheriting the island's war god, Kamehameha clashed with his cousin for
control, ultimately triumphing and taking over the island.
With
the help of foreign allies, Kamehameha traded Hawaiian sandalwood for Western
weapons, allowing him to conquer most of the islands. By 1810, he became the
first leader to rule over all the Hawaiian Islands.
His
reign brought progress to Hawaii, including new laws that protected travelers
and the defenseless. Kamehameha passed away in 1819, and his son Liholiho
succeeded him as Kamehameha II. His brother Kauikeaouli followed him and became
Kamehameha III.
