Holiday Highlight
National Hole In My Bucket Day
There’s no record of when the first National Hole In My Bucket Day
was celebrated, but that doesn't dampen our spirits as we celebrate this day
with all its grandeur. This holiday is a joyful tribute to the children’s song,
‘There’s a Hole In My Bucket.’ The earliest version of the song, a charming
piece from a 1700s collection of German songs called “Bergliederbüchlein,” only
mentions Liza’s name (Liese), while the other character remains unnamed. Over
the years, Henry’s name was added to the verses, and the song was renamed
‘Heinrich und Liese.’ With the advent of literacy and globalization, the song's
popularity spread across various European countries, even reaching the shores
of North America.
The lyrics to ‘There’s a Hole In My Bucket’ depict a conversation
between Henry and Liza. Henry shares his bucket issue, and Liza suggests a
creative solution using a straw. However, for the straw to be practical, he
needs to cut it, but all he has is a dull knife, which needs to be sharpened on
a wet sharpening stone. And to get the water, he needs a functional bucket in
the first place. This tale of resourcefulness and creativity makes for an
engaging activity with its rhymes and poetic meters. People celebrate the day
by fixing the holes in their buckets or repurposing faulty
buckets into plant pots or umbrella stands, showcasing their ingenuity and love
for the holiday.
