Holidays And Observance
National Cherish an Antique Day
Archaeologists and historians have unmasked various ways to
preserve history. Antiques can provide a unique perspective of how people
cherish and look after things that are dear to them and how these objects
become heirlooms. Antiques specifically refer to the preclassical and classical
cultures of the ancient world. People began to collect antiques around the 16th
century when English and European collectors would trade them for money. Most
of these trades would happen among the upper-class members of the late
Renaissance society. It was not until the 18th century that both public and
private members began to collect antiques.
This trend of collecting antiques emerged in tandem with the
development of art and the science of archaeology. During the 18th century, the
preservation of authentic antiques became a specialized skill, with dedicated
craftsmen appointed to care for these items. The term 'antiques' encompassed many
objects, including books, personal possessions, and mementos left behind by
families. These items, once considered mere remnants of the past, gained
popularity among collectors of both art and historical artifacts. The
establishment of National Cherish an Antique Day further recognizes and
celebrates the efforts of those who collect antiques from all corners of the
globe.
National Cherish an Antique Day is a significant event that offers
a unique opportunity to delve into the world of antiques through visits to
museums and antique shops. This day not only allows those with antiques to
uncover the rich history of their families but also serves as a platform to
acknowledge and appreciate those who restore and revive these precious
artifacts.
