Holidays And Observance

WALK TO WORKDAY

Walking is one of the most straightforward exercises, so Walk to Workday shouldn’t hinder most. Just putting one step in front of the other is liberating. Let’s walk ourselves through the day’s history and how it came to be.

In 2004, “Prevention” magazine came up with Walk to Workday and decided on the first Friday in April as the day for it to be celebrated. This magazine is famous for providing its readers with health strategies and information to help improve physical- and mental well-being. The U.S. Department of Health soon backed up the Walk to Workday idea, a step they had been pushing for years. While the day is unofficial, it is celebrated with much fanfare and enthusiasm.

Walking is beneficial not only for our health but also for the environment. Even if your workplace is too far, you can still contribute by walking to public transport. This small change can provide a much-needed break from pollution and reduce your carbon footprint. Inspired by these benefits, the Pedestrian Council of Australia declared a National Walk to Workday on November 13. The Australian government has been commemorating the day since 2000, with 2003 becoming the first year when a unanimous date was decided on for all Australian states.

Walking is not just about physical health; it's a powerful stress reliever. It engages your muscles, increases your heart rate, and allows your senses to absorb soothing environmental stimuli. From the gentle breeze and bird sounds to the smell of flowers in the air and a much-needed dose of vitamin D, walking offers a holistic experience. Whether working from home or in an office, you can celebrate the day by walking within your surroundings or taking a stroll around the block.
