Holidays And Observance

WORLD RAT DAY

Rats, one of the oldest mammals still thriving today, have a remarkable history. They were present during the dinosaurs' reign, surviving the Jurassic era's extinction and witnessing the mammal era's dawn. They observed the birth of numerous species, some of which became their predators, and the rise of human civilization. They have seen our triumphs and blunders, even punishing us with plagues. Their resilience is such that they will likely outlast us, continuing their journey long after we are gone.

Rats belong to the long-tailed rodents of medium size from Rodentia and genus Rattus. Their long tail is a prominent feature, and rats can use it for thermal control. Rats are pests in most of the world but are not initially found in every part. Most of them were introduced by ships in the medieval era. Black rats are notoriously successful as an invasive species. However, different cultures view rats in a different light. Rats are bad news in European cultures, whereas they are better represented in Asian cultures. Rats are present in the Chinese zodiac and are also mentioned as the vehicle of God Ganesh, according to Hindu mythologies.

Rats are not just pests; they are intelligent and cunning creatures. The popularity of domestic rats is on the rise, and for good reason. Over generations in captivity, rats have become more friendly and curious, showing potential to be excellent companions. Contrary to popular belief, pet rats pose no more threat or carry any more diseases than a typical dog or cat. Their small size and flexible eating habits make them low maintenance, further adding to their appeal as pets.
