Holiday Highlight

World Tapir Day

World Tapir Day was created to save this threatened species from extinction so that they will be around for our children’s enjoyment. Because they live in forest or jungle environments, they are susceptible to deforestation, especially for giant herbivores like them. Tapirs are endemic to Central and South America as well as Southeast Asia. They have the overall build of a pig with hoofed toes, but they also have the long snout of an elephant. This magnificent animal is currently on the endangered species list due to over-hunting for meat and hides.

Nonetheless, the implications of its extinction go far beyond the extinction of another unique species; the extinction of the tapir could jeopardize the entire surviving forest ecosystem. Tapirs are among the most ancient species in these parts of the world and help disseminate seeds across the forest through natural activities.

It's alarming that many people are unaware of the tapir's existence, disconnecting them from a unique part of our planet without their knowledge. These animals are so unfamiliar that even regular zoo visitors often mistake them for other species. This lack of awareness is a concern, even in countries where tapirs are native, underscoring the importance of World Tapir Day in raising global awareness about this endangered species.
